Skardu city & bazaar

The practical base for most trips — closest to the airport, restaurants, jeep hire and tour offices. Best if you're doing day trips to Deosai, Kachura and Katpana.

Kachura & the lakes

Lakeside resorts and guest houses 20 km west of town. Quieter and more scenic, but you'll drive back into the city for food and transport.

Shigar valley

Heritage stays inside and around the restored 17th-century fort, surrounded by orchards. Ideal for one night on the way to or from Khaplu.

Khaplu

Three hours east, with the region's best-preserved palace hotel. Worth an overnight rather than a rushed day trip.

Camping

Bara Pani in Deosai, Basho valley meadows and the desert edge at Katpana. Operators in Skardu rent full kit and set up serviced camps in summer.
