Khaplu Valley & Khaplu Palace

Khaplu Palace, or Yabgo Khar, is the best-preserved royal residence in Baltistan, blending Tibetan, Kashmiri and Balti architecture around a central courtyard. A ticketed tour covers the museum rooms explaining Balti court life, the carved wooden screens and the long verandas overlooking the valley.

Because the drive from Skardu takes 2.5 to 3 hours, most visitors treat the palace tour as the anchor of a longer stop in Khaplu rather than a quick add-on, often combining it with lunch or an overnight stay.

The 14th-century Chaqchan Mosque in Khaplu bazaar is one of the oldest wooden mosques in the subcontinent, built around 1370, and is a short walk from the palace, making it easy to combine both on the same visit.

Khaplu bazaar itself has small shops and simple eateries, useful for a lunch stop or to pick up supplies before continuing on to Hushe or Thalle valley the following day.

At 103 km and 2.5 to 3 hours each way, a same-day return from Skardu is a long day focused mostly on driving, leaving limited time to properly explore the palace and mosque. An overnight stay is generally the better option.

Staying overnight also positions you well to continue on to Hushe valley or Thalle valley the next morning, both of which branch off from Khaplu and are difficult to fit into a single-day itinerary alongside the palace visit.
