Khaplu, capital of the old Yabgo kingdom, sits above the Shyok river in Ghanche district. Its 19th-century palace is the best-preserved royal residence in Baltistan and, like Shigar, was restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
The palace blends Tibetan, Kashmiri and Balti building traditions — carved wooden screens, a central courtyard and long verandas facing the valley. A small museum explains Balti court life before the region joined Pakistan.
Khaplu is also the jumping-off point for Hushe valley and the Masherbrum region, and the 14th-century Chaqchan Mosque in the bazaar is one of the oldest wooden mosques in the subcontinent.
