Better known as Shangrila, Lower Kachura Lake is the postcard image of Skardu — a still, emerald pool ringed by poplars and apricot blossom, with a crimson-roofed restaurant built into the fuselage of a crashed aircraft sitting on its shore.
Shangrila Resort opened in 1983 and has been the anchor of Baltistan tourism ever since. The gardens are manicured to a degree that feels almost surreal against the raw brown mountains behind them, and the lake itself is shallow, warm-toned and perfectly framed for photographs from almost any angle.
Most visitors combine Shangrila with Upper Kachura Lake, which sits a short drive further up the same road and is wilder, deeper and colder. Doing both in a single half-day is the standard Skardu itinerary opener.
Spring brings apricot and cherry blossom across the whole Kachura area, while autumn turns the poplars gold. Mid-summer is busiest — Pakistani families arrive in large numbers through July and August, and weekends can feel crowded by mountain standards.

How to get there
Drive west from Skardu city on the Skardu–Gilgit road for roughly 20 km, then turn off at the signposted Kachura link road. Any hotel can arrange a car or jeep, and local taxis run the route on a half-day rate.
