Fong Khar — 'the palace on the rock' — was built by the Amacha dynasty in the 17th century, abandoned, then painstakingly restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture into a museum and heritage hotel that won a UNESCO award.
The fort's carved wooden balconies, Kashmiri stonework and original raja's apartments make it the single best cultural stop in Baltistan. The attached museum holds Balti household objects, weapons and manuscripts.
Shigar valley itself is a green corridor of apricot and walnut orchards along the Shigar river, and the road through it continues to Askole — the last village and the trailhead for K2 Base Camp and Concordia treks.
