Shigar Fort & Shigar Valley

Shigar Fort, known locally as Fong Khar, operates as both a museum and a heritage hotel, so day visitors can tour the public rooms, courtyard and museum on a ticketed basis without staying overnight. Guided walk-throughs typically cover the raja's original apartments, carved wooden balconies and the small collection of Balti artefacts.

Allow around 45 minutes to an hour for an unhurried visit, more if you plan to have tea in the courtyard afterwards, which is a popular way to end the tour given the setting.

Beyond the fort itself, Shigar valley is a green ribbon of apricot and walnut orchards along the Shigar river, at its best from late spring blossom through to the August and September fruit harvest. A gentle walk or drive through the orchard villages is a good complement to the fort visit.

The same road continues north to Askole, the road-head for K2 Base Camp and Concordia treks, so Shigar is where most Karakoram expeditions pass through on their final stretch of paved or semi-paved road before the trail begins.

Shigar Fort Residence is the standout stay, a small number of rooms inside the restored fort itself, generally needing advance booking given limited capacity. Simpler guest houses and camps operate through the wider valley for a more affordable option.

Most food in the valley is home-style Balti cooking served at guest houses, with a limited number of small roadside eateries in Shigar bazaar for lunch stops.
