5 days

Skardu in 5 days — the essentials

The classic short trip: both Kachura lakes, Deosai, the cold desert and Shigar Fort, with an easy first day to adjust to the altitude.

Best for: First-time visitors flying in from Islamabad

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Skardu

    Fly in from Islamabad, settle into your hotel, walk Skardu bazaar and hike up to Kharpocho Fort for sunset.

  2. Day 2

    Kachura lakes

    Shangrila Resort, Upper Kachura Lake and Blind Lake, then Katpana Cold Desert for sunset.

  3. Day 3

    Deosai National Park

    Full-day jeep trip via Satpara Lake to Bara Pani and back. Long day — leave by 7am.

  4. Day 4

    Shigar valley

    Sarfaranga desert, Shigar Fort museum and Amburiq Mosque, returning to Skardu in the evening.

  5. Day 5

    Depart

    Morning flight out, or start the two-day road journey down the KKH to Islamabad.

7 days

Skardu in 7 days — lakes, forts and Khaplu

Adds an overnight in Khaplu, a Kharmang day for Manthoka Waterfall and a spare buffer day for weather.

Best for: Couples and families wanting a relaxed pace

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Skardu

    Arrival, bazaar, Kharpocho Fort sunset.

  2. Day 2

    Kachura lakes & Katpana

    Shangrila, Upper Kachura, Blind Lake and the cold desert.

  3. Day 3

    Deosai

    Satpara Lake, Bara Pani and the Deosai plateau by jeep.

  4. Day 4

    Shigar

    Sarfaranga desert and Shigar Fort; overnight in Shigar valley.

  5. Day 5

    Khaplu

    Drive to Khaplu, tour Khaplu Palace and Chaqchan Mosque; overnight Khaplu.

  6. Day 6

    Kharmang

    Return towards Skardu, detouring to Manthoka Waterfall.

  7. Day 7

    Depart

    Buffer day for weather-delayed flights, or fly home.

10 days

Skardu in 10 days — including Hushe and Basho

The full Baltistan loop with camping in Basho, the Hushe valley beneath Masherbrum, and time on the Deosai plateau rather than a rushed day trip.

Best for: Trekkers, photographers and repeat visitors

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Skardu

    Acclimatise, bazaar, Kharpocho Fort.

  2. Day 2

    Kachura & Katpana

    Both lakes, Blind Lake and the desert at sunset.

  3. Day 3–4

    Deosai overnight

    Camp at Bara Pani, continue to Sheosar Lake the next morning.

  4. Day 5

    Shigar

    Fort, museum and Sarfaranga; overnight Shigar.

  5. Day 6–7

    Khaplu & Hushe

    Khaplu Palace, then up to Hushe village beneath Masherbrum.

  6. Day 8

    Thalle or Kharmang

    Thalle valley villages, or Manthoka Waterfall on the Indus road.

  7. Day 9

    Basho valley

    Jeep track into the pine forest and meadows; camp or return.

  8. Day 10

    Depart

    Fly out of Skardu, or begin the road journey to Islamabad.
