Skardu tour packages

A standard Skardu package sold by a Gilgit-Baltistan tour operator or an Islamabad based travel agency usually bundles transport, accommodation, a fixed sightseeing itinerary and a driver or guide into one quoted price per person. What varies enormously between operators is where the line is drawn between what is bundled and what you pay for on the ground, so reading the inclusions list line by line matters more than comparing headline prices.

Commonly included

• Return airport or road transfers between Islamabad or Skardu city and the hotel
• Hotel or guest house accommodation on a twin sharing basis, sometimes with breakfast
• A private or shared jeep with driver for named sightseeing days such as Deosai or Shigar
• Entry tickets to Shangrila Resort and the Deosai National Park gate
• A local guide for heritage sites such as Shigar Fort or Khaplu Palace

Commonly excluded

• Flights to Skardu, which most agencies quote separately because seat availability and fares change weekly
• Lunches and dinners, unless the package explicitly says full board
• Camping equipment for Deosai or Basho overnights
• Fuel surcharges added after landslide detours on the KKH
• Tips for the driver and guide, which are customary but not fixed

Ask for a day by day breakdown rather than a bullet list of highlights. A package that simply says 'Deosai, Shigar, Kachura lakes included' without stating which day each falls on and how many hours are allocated is the most common source of disappointment once travellers are on the ground and find two major sights squeezed into a single rushed afternoon.

Operators typically sell four broad categories of Skardu package, and the right one depends more on who you are travelling with than on budget alone.

Group packages keep the per person cost down because the vehicle and driver cost is shared, but the itinerary is fixed and photography stops are rushed to keep the group moving. Private packages cost more per head but let you linger at Upper Kachura for sunrise or add an extra night in Khaplu without renegotiating with strangers.

Honeymoon packages are essentially private packages with a different accommodation tier, usually built around Shigar Fort Residence or Khaplu Palace's Serena property, plus a private dinner arranged on request. Trekking packages are a different product entirely: they are sold by mountaineering focused operators who also arrange permits, high altitude porters and Alpine Club of Pakistan liaison officer paperwork for peaks and passes such as Gondogoro La.

A private jeep does not just buy comfort, it buys the ability to change your mind about the day once you see the weather.

Prices in Gilgit-Baltistan tourism move with fuel costs, PIA and private airline fares, and how far in advance you book, so treat the following as broad seasonal ranges rather than quotes, and always confirm current pricing with the operator in writing before paying anything.

Flights bought separately typically add a further 30,000 to 60,000 PKR return per person depending on season, since summer weekend fares to Skardu run well above midweek winter fares. Road packages avoid the flight cost but add one to two extra nights of hotel and driver time for the Karakoram Highway crossing, which is why the per person total often ends up closer than travellers expect.

Corporate groups and university trips can usually negotiate a lower per head rate above roughly fifteen participants, but should budget separately for a second support vehicle, since Gilgit-Baltistan jeeps rarely seat more than seven safely on mountain roads.

Baltistan's tourism boom has brought in a wide range of operators, from long established Skardu based family businesses to newly registered agencies advertising heavily on social media. A short verification process before paying a deposit avoids most of the problems travellers report.

1. Ask for the operator's registration with the Gilgit-Baltistan tourism department or Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation and check the name matches their invoice
2. Ask which specific vehicle model and year will be used, and request a photo. A worn out Hiace on the Skardu to Deosai track is a genuine safety issue, not a comfort quibble
3. Confirm the driver's name and years of experience on the specific route, since Deosai and Basho jeep tracks require different skills than the paved KKH
4. Ask for two recent traveller references you can contact directly rather than relying only on posted reviews
5. Request the exact hotel names for every night, not just the town, since 'hotel in Skardu' can mean anything from a 3-star property to a basic guest house
6. Clarify who pays for delays: an extra hotel night if a flight is cancelled, or extra fuel if a landslide forces a detour

Operators who resist naming a specific vehicle, driver or hotel until after a deposit is paid are the clearest warning sign in the whole booking process. Reputable Skardu agencies are used to these questions and answer them without hesitation.

• April and May: blossom season, package prices are moderate, Deosai is still closed so operators substitute extra time in Shigar and Khaplu
• June: Deosai usually opens in the second half of the month, book Deosai inclusive packages with a flexible date rather than a fixed one
• July and August: peak season, highest prices, book at least four to six weeks ahead for both flights and hotels
• September: the best value premium month, clear skies, thinning crowds, full Deosai access until roughly mid-month
• October: strong for road trip and photography packages, Deosai closes mid-month so confirm it is not still listed on your itinerary
• November to March: only winter specific packages built around Katpana snow and Skardu city make sense, most valley roads and Deosai are closed

Trekking packages run to their own calendar, largely July to early September, since Askole and the glacier approaches only become passable once the winter snowpack has retreated.

Families travelling with young children or grandparents should ask specifically about vehicle seating, since Gilgit-Baltistan jeeps used on the Deosai and Basho tracks have less legroom than a standard car and long unpaved stretches are physically tiring for anyone with back problems.

Family-specific questions to ask

• Is there a child seat or is the vehicle only fitted with standard belts
• Can the Deosai day be shortened for a family with small children, since a full loop can mean 8 to 10 hours on rough tracks
• Are family rooms or connecting rooms available at each hotel, rather than two separate twin rooms

Corporate and university group questions to ask

• How many vehicles will run in convoy, and is there a radio or phone chain between drivers for a group larger than one jeep
• Is there a single point of contact travelling with the group, or only a phone number in Skardu bazaar
• What is the refund policy if part of the group cancels closer to the departure date

Larger groups of fifteen or more should also confirm hotel capacity in writing, since Skardu's better hotels can sell out entirely on July and August weekends, leaving a group split across two or three properties at short notice.

Verbal promises made over a phone call or a chat app rarely survive intact once a trip is underway. A short written confirmation, even a simple message summary, protects both sides.

Screenshots of a WhatsApp confirmation are sufficient for most disputes, but a signed voucher or emailed itinerary is stronger if a significant deposit is involved.

• Booking a 5 day air package without a buffer day, then losing an entire day of sightseeing to a weather cancelled flight
• Assuming Deosai is included year round, when it is only accessible roughly late June to mid-September
• Choosing the cheapest quoted price without checking whether meals, entry tickets and fuel to Deosai are actually included
• Not confirming whether the package uses one shared jeep for the whole group or splits into multiple vehicles once numbers exceed six or seven
• Skipping travel insurance that covers high altitude activity and flight delay, both genuinely relevant in Gilgit-Baltistan
• Overloading a short trip with too many valleys, Skardu, Khaplu, Hushe and Basho rarely fit comfortably into less than seven days
