Deosai National Park

Jeeps typically leave Skardu around 7am to make the most of clear morning weather, since cloud and wind on the plateau tend to build through the afternoon. The route climbs past Satpara Lake to the Sadpara gate, then bumps across open grassland to Bara Pani for a streamside lunch.

From Bara Pani, travellers with more time push on towards Sheosar Lake before turning back, though this extends the round trip to a very long day, often ten hours of driving and stops combined. A shorter version turning back at Bara Pani is more comfortable for families or first-time visitors.

1. 7am: depart Skardu by jeep
2. 8am: pass Satpara Lake and the Sadpara gate
3. 9:30am to 11am: cross the open plateau, watch for marmots and bears
4. 12pm: lunch stop at Bara Pani
5. Optional: continue to Sheosar Lake, adding 2 to 3 hours
6. Return to Skardu by early evening

Deosai is snowbound for most of the year and only accessible roughly from late June to mid-September, so travel dates matter more here than almost anywhere else in Baltistan. Booking a jeep without checking that season is a common mistake among first-time planners.

The plateau's Himalayan brown bears are most active at dawn and dusk and are usually seen at a distance rather than up close, sightings are never guaranteed. Marmots, by contrast, are common and easy to spot sunning themselves near the track through most of the day.

The plateau sits above 4,000 metres, high enough that mild headaches, breathlessness or fatigue are common even on a day visit. Drinking water steadily and avoiding heavy exertion helps, and anyone with a heart or lung condition should get medical advice before going.

There is no fuel station, shop or reliable mobile signal once you leave Sadpara, so pack everything you will need for the day: water, snacks, a warm layer, sun protection and any medication.
