Sarfaranga Cold Desert

Sarfaranga transforms completely during the Sarfaranga Cold Desert Jeep Rally, when grandstands, food stalls and large crowds fill a plain that is otherwise empty for most of the year. Dates are announced by the Gilgit-Baltistan tourism department only a few weeks ahead, so check current listings before planning around it.

Outside the rally window, the desert is a wide, quiet expanse with the Karakoram skyline rising straight out of the sand, and sunrise is typically the best time to photograph it without wind disturbing the dune surface.

Hired 4x4s and quad bikes operate informally at the site for visitors wanting to try dune driving, generally arranged with local drivers on arrival rather than booked ahead. This is separate from the organised rally, which uses professional teams and a marked course.

The open, largely flat terrain makes it an easier introduction to dune driving than more technical off-road routes elsewhere in Baltistan, though loose sand still catches out inexperienced drivers.

The desert sits directly on the Skardu to Shigar road, about 20 km out, so it works naturally as a stop on the way to or from Shigar Fort rather than a separate trip. The road is paved the entire way.

Because it needs little time outside rally season, most itineraries pair a short stop here with a fuller visit to Shigar Fort and the surrounding orchards, continuing on the same road.
