Sarfaranga is the wide, wind-scoured desert plain on the Skardu–Shigar road, best known for hosting the Sarfaranga Cold Desert Jeep Rally — one of the highest-altitude motorsport events in the world.

Outside rally season the plain is empty and enormous, with the Karakoram wall rising directly out of the sand. It is a favourite spot for sunrise photography and for dune-bashing in hired 4x4s.

The rally itself normally runs in summer and transforms the area with grandstands, food stalls and thousands of spectators — worth planning around either to attend or to avoid.

How to get there

Take the Skardu–Shigar road for about 20 km; the desert opens out on the right before the Shigar bridge.
