Skardu weather patterns, snowfall and the best months to visit

A dry mountain desert at 2,230 metres, Skardu has hot sunny summers, cold clear winters and less snow than most people expect. Here is how each season behaves, when snow is most likely and which months suit your kind of trip.

The short answer

For most travellers the best months to visit Skardu are April to early May for blossom and mild days, and mid June to September for full access, including Deosai and the high valleys. Snowfall in the valley usually comes between December and February, with January the most reliable month to see the town and the Katpana dunes under snow.

Why Skardu weather behaves differently

Skardu sits in a wide basin where the Shigar river meets the Indus, ringed by mountains of the Karakoram and western Himalaya. Those ranges block most of the moisture that reaches the plains of Pakistan, so the valley lies in a rain shadow and behaves like a high, cold desert. Annual rain and snow combined is very low compared with Islamabad or Murree, and most days of the year are dry and sunny.

Altitude does the rest. At roughly 2,230 metres the air is thin and dry, so it heats quickly in the sun and loses heat quickly after dark. That is why a July afternoon can feel hot while the same evening calls for a fleece, and why winter nights fall well below freezing even after a bright day.

Where the moisture comes from

The South Asian monsoon rarely reaches Skardu in strength. Most of the valley's precipitation arrives with western disturbances, weather systems moving in from the west in late winter and spring. That makes February to April the period when cloudy, unsettled spells and late snow are most likely, while high summer is usually the driest and most stable time.

Skardu seasons explained

Spring: March to May

Snow retreats from the valley floor in March and the orchards wake up. Apricot blossom usually peaks in late March and early April, followed by cherry blossom, turning Shigar, Kachura and Khaplu pink and white. Days are mild and nights still cold. Higher passes and Deosai remain closed, and short unsettled spells with rain or light snow are normal.

Summer: June to August

This is peak season. Valley afternoons are typically in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, nights in the low to mid teens. Snowmelt fills the rivers and lakes, Deosai's road usually opens around mid to late June and the trekking season to Concordia and K2 Base Camp runs at full pace. Skardu itself stays mostly dry, but the Karakoram Highway further south can be hit by monsoon cloudbursts and landslides in July and August.

Autumn: September to November

September keeps summer's access with cooler, clearer air and is one of the best months for photography. October brings the famous autumn colour and crisp nights near freezing. By November, high areas are closing, some hotels begin to shut for winter and the first snow often dusts the surrounding peaks.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cold, dry and quiet. Daytime highs hover just above freezing and nights commonly drop to around minus 8 to minus 12 Celsius, with colder snaps possible. Lakes such as Satpara and Upper Kachura can freeze at the edges, Deosai is buried and many guest houses close. In return you get empty viewpoints, clean air and, on the right week, the rare sight of snow on desert sand at Katpana.

Snowfall in Skardu: when, where and how much

Because the valley is so dry, snowfall in Skardu town is less frequent and lighter than many visitors expect. Snow does fall most winters, but it often arrives as a handful of events rather than a constant blanket, and sunny days can melt thin cover on south facing slopes within a few days.

Snow by area

  • Skardu town and Katpana (about 2,230 m): light to moderate falls in mid winter, rarely deep or lasting.
  • Shigar and Khaplu (about 2,300 to 2,600 m): similar to Skardu, with shaded villages holding snow longer.
  • Satpara and the road towards Deosai: noticeably snowier, with frozen lake surfaces in deep winter.
  • Deosai plateau (about 4,100 m): under heavy snow from roughly November until late May or June, closed to vehicles.
  • Basho, Hushe and Baltoro: high country stays snowbound for months and is out of reach in winter.

Which month is best in Skardu for snowfall

If seeing snow is the goal, plan for the second half of December through early February, and stay flexible by a few days. January gives the best balance of cold, snow chance and clear skies afterwards for photos. Watch forecasts for an incoming western disturbance and time your trip to arrive just after it passes.

Best months to visit, ranked by trip type

  1. Late June to mid July: the safest choice for a first trip, with Deosai open, lakes full and every valley reachable.
  2. September: summer access with fewer crowds, calmer weather and sharper views.
  3. April: blossom season and pleasant temperatures, but without Deosai or the high treks.
  4. October: autumn colour and quiet roads, cold nights and some closures starting.
  5. May: green valleys and comfortable days, still too early for Deosai.
  6. December to February: only for travellers who specifically want snow and solitude.

Families usually do best in June and September, when days are warm, nights are manageable and roads are open. Couples and photographers often prefer April or October. Trekkers must work around the June to August window for K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La.

How weather affects flights and roads

Flights between Islamabad and Skardu fly through mountain terrain and depend on visibility. Cancellations happen in every season but are most common in winter and during cloudy spring spells. If your plans are tight, keep a spare day at the end of the trip.

By road, winter brings ice and occasional snow on the Skardu road, while July and August bring the risk of landslides on the Karakoram Highway after heavy monsoon rain further south. Check current road status before setting off and avoid driving after dark in either season.

What to pack for each season

SeasonEssentials
SpringWarm layers, light down jacket, waterproof shell, sunglasses
SummerLight clothing for day, fleece for evenings, warm jacket for Deosai, sunscreen and hat
AutumnLayers, warm jacket, gloves and beanie for nights
WinterInsulated down jacket, thermals, waterproof boots, gloves, lip balm and moisturiser

Whatever the month, the sun at this altitude is strong and the air is dry. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a refillable water bottle matter as much in January as they do in July.

Skardu weather and snowfall questions

Which month is best in Skardu for snowfall?
January gives the best odds of snow in Skardu town and on the Katpana dunes, with late December and early February close behind. Valley snow is usually light, so stay flexible and watch the forecast.
Does it snow in Skardu every year?
Snow falls in most winters, but because Skardu is in a dry rain shadow, the valley floor often sees only a few light to moderate events. The surrounding mountains, Satpara and Deosai receive far more.
What is the best time to visit Skardu?
Late June to September for full access including Deosai, or April for blossom season. Families usually prefer June or September for comfortable temperatures.
Is Skardu hot in summer?
Afternoons in the valley often reach the high 20s to low 30s Celsius in July, but evenings cool quickly and Deosai stays cold, so pack layers.
When does Deosai open?
The road usually opens around mid to late June once snow clears and stays open until roughly late September or October, depending on the year.
Do flights to Skardu get cancelled because of weather?
Yes. Flights depend on visibility through the mountains and are cancelled more often in winter and during cloudy spring spells. Keep a buffer day in your plan.
