Satpara Lake

Every jeep heading up to Deosai National Park passes Satpara Lake first, about 20 minutes out of Skardu on the road that climbs towards the plateau. Many drivers use the weather and cloud cover visible from here to judge whether conditions higher up look settled before continuing.

Even for travellers not continuing to Deosai, Satpara is worth the short drive on its own, with boating to the small island near the centre of the lake being the main draw.

Motorboats and rowing boats operate from the shore near the dam, with the small island in the middle of the lake being the classic photograph most visitors come for. Boat hire is charged separately from the free lake entry.

Roadside stalls near the dam sell trout and chai, a common quick stop for people heading up to or back from Deosai.

The dam, completed in 2003, supplies Skardu with water and electricity and forms the broad turquoise lake seen today. Nearby Satpara village holds Buddhist rock carvings, a reminder of the region's pre-Islamic history, worth a short detour for anyone interested in Baltistan's older heritage.

The combination of dam infrastructure, lake views and historical carvings makes Satpara a worthwhile stop even for a short half-day out of Skardu city.
