Kharpocho — 'the king of forts' — was built by Ali Sher Khan Anchan in the late 16th century on a rock spur that dominates Skardu town, the Indus and the Shigar confluence.
The walk up takes about thirty minutes on a stepped path from the base of the rock. It is steep but short, and the reward is the single best overview of the Skardu valley: the braided Indus, the airport runway, Katpana's dunes and the peaks beyond.
Little of the interior survives, but the ramparts and the small mosque below the fort are intact. Go an hour before sunset and bring water — there is no shade on the climb.
