Sheosar means 'blind lake' in Shina — water with no visible outflow. At over 4,100 metres it is one of the highest lakes in the world reachable by vehicle, and on a still morning the Nanga Parbat massif shows on the horizon.
The lake sits at the western edge of the Deosai plateau, closer to Chilim and Astore than to Skardu, which is why many travellers see it as part of a Skardu-to-Astore crossing rather than a there-and-back day trip.
Wildflowers ring the shoreline in July, and the water shifts from steel grey to deep sapphire as the light changes. Camping is permitted with park permission, but nights are near freezing even in August.
Highlights
